MediConnect Launches First-of-Its-Kind Provider Network Offering, Giving Physicians Free Access to Health Information Exchange

New Service Securely Stores Physicians' Digitized Medical Records and Electronic Medical Records in Central Online Repository, which Currently Hosts Nearly 10 Million Medical Records

MediConnect Global recently announced the immediate availability of the Provider Network Offering, a first-of-its-kind free service that allows healthcare providers hosting, authorized access and exchange of digitized and electronic medical records in the National Secured Archive (N.S.A.), MediConnect's secure, cloud-based medical record repository.

Using MediConnect's Provider Network Offering, physicians and other caregivers within a provider network can upload both digitized paper records and electronic medical records (EMRs) into the fully HIPAA-compliant N.S.A., the largest repository of its kind approaching 10 million records. After the records are uploaded, and at the physician's request, MediConnect's Health Information Exchange (HIE) enables patients to access their health information using myMediConnect, MediConnect's free online personal health record (PHR) portal. Patients and providers within the network can also authorize access to physicians outside the network as well as insurance payers, who can access the medical records through RapidRetrieve, the company's proprietary workflow system for insurance providers.

"The Provider Network Offering for physicians is designed to alleviate their burden of managing the increasing demand for the release of patient medical records to health insurance payers and other authorized parties," said Amy Rees Anderson, CEO of MediConnect. "Physicians who take advantage of this offering will be able to deposit patient records into the N.S.A. and simply redirect any future requests for medical records to MediConnect for processing. All of this is done at no charge to the physicians."

When paper medical records are digitized, uploaded and made accessible through MediConnect's HIE, the proper data elements are indexed so the information is correlated to the patient, the physician and the location of the physical record"”making it easy to search, locate and manage the information. Indexing also allows records to be delivered back to the physician, tagged to allow easier online access as well as the ability to import the record into any EMR system. MediConnect's N.S.A. also acts as a free option for providers to store a secure electronic backup of medical records, which is especially helpful in disaster recovery situations.

"With our HIE, we are providing global access to medical records for authorized users as needed at each step along the healthcare process," added Anderson. "By securely keeping this information centralized in the cloud, and allowing physicians and patients free access through our Provider Network Offering and the myMediConnect PHR, we are empowering individuals to take control of their own health and helping to improve patient care by giving physicians access to the critical information they need, when they need it."

I love that you’re making this free for physicians, because unfortunately they’re just not going to pay for it. However, how do you plan to make money if the physicians aren’t paying for it? I’d love to learn more about your economic model for creating a sustainable HIE.
